Cities’ Stretch

Underneath the tunnel we stood

And shouted

Hearing our voices

Reverberate.

Bouncing back to us,

Around us,

Hugging us together.

We kicked the city’s autumn leaves

Into the sunset’s sun rays,

And watched the river’s ripples

Catch the last glints.

The city’s spires stretch into the sky

Like a yawning figure.

Our feet were sore

As we had explored

The bodies of the city and of each other.

Back in bed we lay

When I was yours

And you were mine.

But tunnels take us through the other side

And no-one knows where the city’s autumn leaves

Fall

And disappear too,

Or turn to something new.

The grass pushes through

The cracks between the pavements.

You loved me with such patience.

But with the dying light of day

Our heart-filled love has moved away.

Now different cities’ spires stretch

Caressing fresh and blinking skies

But I remember all the times

The echoes danced upon the walls,

Our voices bouncing back to us,

Around us,

Hugging us together.
